Песня (song), давшая жизнь этому выражению, представляла из себя длинную поэму 'The Faerie Queen', преподнесённую королеве Елизавете I Эдмундом Спенсером (ок. 1552—99). Несмотря на то что эта поэма стала самым известным и популярным произведением Спенсера, она не произвела должного впечатления на лорда Бёрли (Burleigh), главного казначея. Узнав, что королева предложила заплатить Спенсеру сто фунтов за поэму, он воспротивился, воскликнув: «Что?! Всё это за одну песню?».
